Centers for Rehab Services, a UPMC Partner, Earns Elite Credential for Sports Physical Therapy Residency Program

PITTSBURGH, February 16, 2007 The Centers for Rehab Services (CRS), a partner of UPMC, has become one of six Sports Physical Therapy Residency Programs designated by the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) as an APTA-credentialed post-professional clinical residency program. APTA formally recognized the CRS residency program at the opening ceremonies of its Combined Sections Meeting in Boston on Feb. 14.

We now join an elite group of six other organizations across the country offering a credentialed residency program for sports physical therapy, said Tara Ridge, P.T., M.S., S.C.S., director of the Centers for Rehab Services Sports Physical Therapy Residency Program.

According to Ridge, the CRS residency program exceeded the minimal requirements for credentialing due to its extensive access to academic and clinical resources. The APTA credentialing committee commended UPMCs successful dual relationship between its medical centers and academic programs.

Our residency programs recent accreditation proves that CRS is a definite leader in the physical therapy field, said Freddie H. Fu, M.D., professor and chairman of orthopedic surgery at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. Physical therapy students choose to come here from across the country to learn from our top-rate professionals.

Adhering to the requirements of this APTA-credentialing process also allows CRS to further commit to providing invaluable learning experiences to its participating residents. The program consists of a combination of educational experiences including clinical care, research, didactics and clinical academics. Program graduates not only become respected clinical experts in their specific fields but also are eligible to take board certification examinations in their chosen specialties. CRS will have use of the APTA credential status through November of 2011.

Physical therapy services are an integral part of the comprehensive approach provided at UPMC Center for Sports Medicine, said Christopher Harner, M.D., medial director of the UPMC Center for Sports Medicine. This announcement speaks directly to the ongoing commitment to quality care.
