A Prescription for Information: Patient/Family Resource Center Opens at Western Psychiatric Institute And Clinic of UPMC

PITTSBURGH, May 29, 2007 In an effort to help patients and their families learn more about mental and behavioral health issues, the Health Sciences Library System of UPMC and the University of Pittsburgh (HSLS) has opened a Patient/Family Resource Center in the library of WesternPsychiatric Institute and Clinicof UPMC (WPIC).

The Patient/Family Resource Center contains approximately 500 book titles and 50 videos on behavioral and mental health topics. The materials are easy to understand and contain information appropriate for children, adolescents and adults.

WPIC clinicians and staff are able to prescribe behavioral health information to their patients and families as a means of encouragement to use the resource center. Prescriptions requesting information about a condition or treatment are written by the clinician on an Information Rx pad, much like a regular medication prescription pad. Patients and their families can take these prescriptions to the Patient/Family Resource Center, where the librarian on duty will fill the prescription by helping consumers find the correct information about their condition and treatment.

The Patient/Family Resource Center is on the second floor of the WPIC Library, adjacent to the reference area. Librarians are available to assist with information requests from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday. Patients and families wishing to request information outside of these hours may complete confidential information request forms. Books may be borrowed after registering at the library with a photo ID or address verification. Videos may be viewed in the library.
