UPMC to Manage Independent Hospital in Dublin, Ireland

PITTSBURGH, February 25, 2008 — As part of its mission to bring the most advanced health care to patients worldwide, the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) is partnering with the Beacon Medical Group (BMG) to operate the independent Beacon Hospital in Dublin, Ireland. This is UPMC’s first contract to run a hospital in Ireland.

UPMC’s expanding international portfolio already includes a transplant center in Palermo, Italy; two cancer centers in Ireland, including one inside of the Beacon Hospital; and a partnership to achieve world-class emergency care in Qatar.

“Our agreement with BMG is just the latest sign of UPMC’s commitment to international growth and diversification to improve health care worldwide while supporting our core mission at home,” said UPMC Executive Vice President Charles Bogosta. “We are a leader in providing innovative medical care, technologies and services, leveraging the $7 billion health care enterprise that we have created in Pittsburgh. As a result, we can offer our patients higher quality, greater efficiency and improved access to leading-edge care.”

Under the new management agreement, the 183-bed hospital will be operated by UPMC under the medical directorship of Mark Redmond, M.D., BMG’s co-founder and medical director. BMG retains ownership of the hospital, which opened in January 2007 and offers services in cardiology, dermatology, neurology, orthopaedics and oncology. Previously, the facility was operated by Triad Hospitals Inc., which was acquired last year by Community Health Systems Inc.

“We are pleased that BMG is partnering with UPMC for this critical role in providing the highest-quality health care in Dublin. As we’ve demonstrated with our successful Beacon Hospital Cancer Centre and the Whitfield Cancer Centre in Waterford, UPMC is committed to providing cutting-edge technologies, treatment and health care management in Ireland,” said Michael Costelloe, managing director of UPMC Ireland and the new CEO of Beacon Hospital.

“Beacon Medical Group is delighted to welcome UPMC as operator of Beacon Hospital,” said Dr. Redmond. “A world-renowned health care provider, UPMC embraces a vision and philosophy that mirrors our own. We look forward to working together to establish Beacon Hospital and our other hospitals, which currently are in development, as respected centers of excellence in Ireland.” He stressed that there will be no interruption to services or staffing at the hospital.

As part of the agreement, UPMC will pay 15 million Euros, or about $22 million, for a 25 percent equity interest in the hospital operating company that will lease the facility from BMG. In addition, UPMC is participating with BMG in negotiations to operate three more independent hospitals to be built by BMG on the grounds of public hospitals in Beaumont, Cork and Limerick. BMG recently won approval for these “co-located” hospitals from the Irish government and is finalizing those agreements.

One of the leading academic medical centers in the United States, UPMC has managed the transplant facility in Palermo for more than a decade, where it has performed more than 700 organ transplants and achieved among the highest survival rates for patients in Europe. UPMC also is partnering with Hamad Medical Corp. to improve emergency medical services in Qatar.

In Ireland, the UPMC Whitfield Cancer Centre, a joint venture with Euro Care International, opened in the fall of 2006 and was the first private facility to sign an agreement with the national government’s Health Service Executive (HSE) to provide radiotherapy for cancer patients who do not have private health insurance. Prior to the center’s development, radiation therapy was unavailable locally to Waterford’s 48,000 residents.

The Beacon Hospital Cancer Centre, which opened in May 2007, now serves patients with state-of-the-art radiation therapy, including intensity modulated radiation therapy and image-guided radiation therapy, to make the delivery of radiation safer and more accurate for patients. The center also houses Europe’s first Trilogy TX image-guided radiosurgery system from Varian Medical Systems. In addition to radiotherapy, the center offers cancer imaging and medical and surgical oncology services under one roof.

Both the Beacon and Whitfield centers are linked through a telecommunications network to UPMC’s Hillman Cancer Center in Pittsburgh. This “hub-and-spoke” network, modeled after one in western Pennsylvania, allows highly trained medical physicists to share information and expertise with radiation specialists at satellite centers when developing complex radiation treatment plans for patients.
