UPMC’s Dr. Anthony Yates Receives NFL Physician Award

PITTSBURGH, July 1 – University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) internist and Pittsburgh Steelers physician Anthony Yates, M.D., recently was awarded the Jerry “Hawk” Rhea Award by the National Football League Physicians Society. The award is presented each year to an NFL team physician for distinguished years of service to the respective team, the NFL and long-standing relationships with the members of the Professional Football Athletic Trainers Society.

A resident of Sewickley, Dr. Yates has been a Steelers team physician for more than 30 years. He is respected and recognized by owners, coaches, players and administrators for his genuine interest in the health of his athletes and patients.

John Norwig is the head athletic trainer for the Steelers and said he thinks there is no one more deserving of the prestigious award. “The bottom line about Tony Yates is that he treats all the athletes with their best interest in mind and has a ‘leave no stone unturned’ attitude toward patient care,” Norwig said. “He is not just our team physician but an integral part of the Steelers family.”

Dr. Yates said he was quite surprised but extremely thankful for the honor. “Through the years, I have been blessed with ethical coaches, professional trainers and physicians,” Dr. Yates said, “as well as an organization that fosters a ‘do the right thing’ theme that is epitomized by the ownership that spans three generations.”

To Dr. Yates, being a team physician means providing the best care Sunday to Sunday in the interest of the player and only the player. “It continues to be a great experience,” Dr. Yates said. “Super Bowl XLIII was a bit exciting, too.”

Dr. Yates is assistant clinical professor of medicine at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and co-directs the UPMC Corporate Health Program. He has authored or contributed to several publications and has presented at panels, conferences and roundtable discussions regarding developments in sports-related conditions. Among these, for numerous years he was a presenter and moderator of the NFL Physicians Society in conjunction with the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine Conference. He is a member of more than 10 medical organizations, including the American College of Sports Medicine and the NFL Sub-Committee on Cardiovascular Disease and Risk Prevention in the Athlete. He also is a member of the NFL Physician Society serving on the executive committee and is president-elect.
