UPMC Named to U.S. News & World Report Honor Roll of America’s Best Hospitals for the 11th Time

UPMC is One of Only 14 Hospitals Nationwide, Only One in the Region, on Honor Roll

PITTSBURGH, July 15 – UPMC is once again the region’s only medical center named on the annual U.S. News & World Report Honor Roll of America’s Best Hospitals. UPMC is ranked one of 14 hospitals nationwide that made the Honor Roll of the “nation’s best” in the 2010 survey.

UPMC was ranked in 15 of 16 specialty areas, including seven specialties for which UPMC is in the top 10. Once again, UPMC is southwestern Pennsylvania’s sole medical center to be ranked, placing 13th. Only 152 hospitals of the nearly 5,000 nationally eligible hospitals were ranked in any specialty area. This year marks UPMC’s 11th appearance on the list.

“Our continued membership in the Honor Roll is a reflection of UPMC’s ongoing commitment to outstanding patient care and the advancement of medical therapies and technologies. Our superb physicians, nurses and staff are most deserving of this nationwide recognition,” said Elizabeth Concordia, executive vice president of UPMC and president of the Hospital and Community Services Division.

UPMC’s ranked specialties are:  Ear, nose and throat, 3rd; gynecology, 6th; respiratory disorders, 7th; geriatric care, 8th; orthopaedics, 8th; psychiatry, 9th; rheumatology, 9th; digestive disorders, 11th; rehabilitation, 15th; kidney disorders, 17th; neurology and neurosurgery, 17th; urology, 20th; heart and heart surgery, 22nd; diabetes and endocrinology, 30th; and two rankings in cancer, 31st for UPMC Presbyterian Shadyside and 42nd for Magee-Women’s Hospital of UPMC.

The 2010-11 publication of America’s Best Hospitals is accessible online now at and on sale at newsstands beginning July 27.

In June 2010, Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC was one of eight pediatric hospitals in the country named to U.S. News & World Report’s Honor Roll of America’s “Best Children’s Hospitals.”

UPMC’s Children’s Hospital is ranked in all 10 of the pediatric specialties on the magazine’s annual Best Children’s Hospitals list.
