Pittsburgh Cure Sarcoma 5K Run-Walk

WHAT: Pittsburgh Cure Sarcoma 5K Run-Walk

WHO: Sarcoma patients, friends and family members, survivors and caregivers

WHEN: Sunday, July 17; registration, 6 a.m. to 8 a.m., run/walk begins at 8 a.m.

WHERE: North Park Boathouse, Pearce Mill Road, Allison Park, PA, 15101

WHY: To promote awareness of childhood and adult sarcoma, and to raise funds to support the research that will find a cure for the disease. The University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute Sarcoma Research Fund and the Sarcoma Foundation of America will benefit from funds raised.

Sarcomas are rare cancerous tumors that develop in a variety of tissue structures, including nerves, muscles, joints and bones. These tumors can arise almost anywhere in the body, with most occurring in and around the extremities and in and around the organs. Sarcomas are most prevalent in children and young adults. At any one time, an estimated 50,000 patients in the United States are battling sarcoma. Annually, 4,000 to 5,000 individuals are likely to die from sarcoma.
