UPMC Spotlighting ‘Healthy Aging…Healthy Living…Healthy Community’ at the 2011 Celebrating Senior Champions Event

PITTSBURGH, Sept. 2, 2011 – A collaboration of UPMC Senior Services, the Aging Institute, and the Division of Geriatric Medicine of the University of Pittsburgh, the 2011 Celebrating Senior Champions dinner and auction will recognize individuals and organizations who champion senior causes and help make Pittsburgh a model for healthy aging.

The event gives UPMC and the University of Pittsburgh the opportunity to honor those who make a difference in the lives of seniors in western Pennsylvania and beyond. Proceeds from the benefit and auction support the UPMC Senior Communities Benevolent Care Fund as well as clinical care, medical research and geriatric education programs of the Division of Geriatric Medicine. Last year’s event raised more than $100,000.

This year’s Grand Champion is Stephanie Studenski, M.D., M.P.H., professor of medicine, University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. She is being honored for her multidisciplinary work with seniors among many other accomplishments. Dr. Studenski’s research interests include mobility, balance, rehabilitation, frailty and disability in the senior population.

Ms. Mildred Morrison will be honored for her work as the administrator of the Allegheny County Area Agency on Aging, this year’s Grand Champion organization. The Agency focuses its work on community-based services for persons age 60 and older, community planning about aging concerns, and serves as an advocate for mature adults.

Mrs. Margaret McCoy will receive the Good Neighbor Champion Award. One of the original founders of Sherwood Oaks, a UPMC Senior Community, Mrs. McCoy and her three co-founders saw the need for independent care in their later years and convinced others of the necessity. Sherwood Oaks opened in 1982.

Ms. Ellen Parkes and Mr. James Collie will be named Caregiver Champions for their extraordinary efforts to care for their frail spouses. The two shared their stories and offered each other emotional support through difficult times. After many years as dedicated caregivers and the deaths of their spouses, the two were married in November 2010.

The event will be held at 6 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 3, at the Circuit Center and Ballroom, Five Hot Metal St., South Side.
