Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC Presents 7th Annual Conference on Child Maltreatment

WHAT: Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC will host the 7th Annual Pittsburgh Conference on Child Maltreatment, on Thursday, April 26 and Friday, April 27. The event explores the issues of child abuse and neglect. It is sponsored by the Child Advocacy Center (CAC) at Children’s Hospital, with support from the Verizon Foundation, Verizon Hopeline, the U.S. Department of Justice’s Office of Victims of Crime, and Allegheny County Children’s Court.

The conference will feature John Stirling, M.D., director of the Center for Child Protection at Santa Clara Valley Medical Center in San Jose, California and Aviva Katz, M.D., assistant professor of surgery in the Department of Pediatric Surgery at Children’s, will discuss ethical issues in child maltreatment.

The two-day conference will include workshops and skill-building sessions including current drug trends, medical evaluation of child abuse, collaborations to reduce sexual violence, FBI Behavioral Analysis Unit, interviews of children who have witnessed violence, child abuse research, and child protection issues in the immigrant community.

The annual “Champion of Hope and Healing Award”, established by Children’s, will recognize two outstanding individuals who exemplify dedication and commitment to the health and welfare of children in the region. The awardees are Cathleen Palm, Co-Founder, Protect Our Children Committee; and Tamara Hawthorne, Pittsburgh Bureau of Police.

For the first time, Thursday’s activities will conclude with musical entertainment by:

  • WE ROCK youth residency program, Allegheny County Department of Human Services, coordinated by Liz Berlin
  • The Honorable Kim Berkeley Clark, Court of Common Pleas of Allegheny County, Family Division
  • The Honorable Cheryl Lynn Allen, Superior Court of Pennsylvania
  • Keynote speaker, John Stirling, M.D.

WHEN: 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Thursday, April 26, 2012; 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., Friday, April 27, 2012 

  • Awards presentation will begin promptly at 10:40 a.m. on April 26
  • Musical entertainment will begin at 4:30 p.m. on April 26  

WHERE: The Circuit Center, 5 Hot Metal St., South Side

WHY: The conference is held the last Thursday and Friday of April in observance of National Child Abuse Prevention Month. It is an education opportunity for social workers, caseworkers, legal advocates, police, medical professionals, educators and others who work in the child welfare system.
