Four Prominent Infectious Disease Physicians Join UPMC

PITTSBURGH, Sept. 17, 2012 – Four prominent private practice physicians from Infectious Disease Associates of Western Pennsylvania will be leaving their practice and association with the West Penn Allegheny Health System to join UPMC, effective Oct. 1.
David Weinbaum, M.D., chief of infectious disease at WPAHS, along with Robert Volosky, M.D., Kevin Perez, M.D., and Tony Verdream, M.D., will see patients at UPMC Passavant and UPMC Shadyside as employed physicians of UPMC.  They also will continue seeing patients at Heritage Valley Health System.
“The recruitment of these exceptional physicians will enhance UPMC’s already-strong team of infectious disease physician specialists to better serve the needs of our patients in our hospitals and clinics throughout the region,” said Steven D. Shapiro, M.D., executive vice president, chief medical and scientific officer, and president of the Physician Services Division, UPMC.
“A strong infectious disease department is critical to every hospital to help ensure patient safety and expand quality of care.  Drs. Weinbaum, Volosky, Perez and Verdream have stellar reputations among the medical community as dedicated clinicians, researchers and educators. We are delighted that they have chosen to join UPMC,” Dr. Shapiro added.
