Magee-Womens Hospital of UPMC Receives National Recognition for Environmental Achievements

PITTSBURGH August 1, 2013 Magee-Womens Hospital of UPMC is once again being recognized as a leader in green initiatives and for outstanding commitment to environmental health with an Environmental Excellence Award from Practice Greenhealth and Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification from the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC).
“We are proud that our greening efforts continue to benefit our patients, employees and the environment, and we are honored to be recognized as a green leader by two prestigious environmental organizations,” said Judy Focareta, R.N., coordinator of Environmental Health Initiatives at Magee.
Practice Greenhealth, a national organization aiming to improve the health care sector through the development and implementation of environmentally friendly practices, named Magee a member of its prestigious Environmental Leadership Circle (ELC) for the second consecutive year.
Magee qualified for ELC membership because of green practices such as recycling; reducing waste, energy and chemicals in surgical procedures; eliminating mercury; maintaining an organic garden that provides nutritious vegetables for patient meals and the hospital cafeteria; and incorporating environmental health into community education programs.
Along with ELC membership, the USGBC awarded Magee-Womens Hospital LEED Silver certification for its intensive care and patient care unit expansion. The inpatient units utilize recyclable materials; feature flooring, walls and furniture made with materials free of hazardous chemicals; and Magee reduced its carbon footprint by purchasing local materials and recycling almost 100 percent of its construction waste.
Magee’s inpatient unit also includes recycling in patient rooms, large windows providing natural light, and healthy food grown locally or in Magee’s own organic vegetable garden.
