Scholastic Stars Learn to Become Captains in Every Sense at Student Athlete Leadership Academy

PITTSBURGH, June 27, 2013 – UPMC Sports Medicine is sponsoring the ninth-annual Student Athlete Leadership Academy (SALA) to be held 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 2, at Chatham University. The event allows more than 200 of the area’s most outstanding high school student athletes to interact with community leaders who have found success in various professions.
The participating student athletes were chosen by their athletic directors and coaches as stand-outs not only because they are sports leaders, but school and community leaders as well. The goal of SALA is to help these student athletes to learn the importance of being strong leaders via workshops teaching them how to empower their peers, create positive cultures throughout their high schools, and succeed in sports and life.
“The Academy provides an environment where this group of student athletes can come together to absorb ideas, skills and strategies that will enable them to be impactful leaders in all facets of their lives,” said Aimee Kimball, Ph.D., SALA co-coordinator and director of mental training for UPMC Sports Medicine. “SALA is the type of leadership training event that allows young adults to get the most from themselves and others around them. It also helps to underscore the value of scholastic sports in society.”
Workshop leaders include:
  • Jack Ouellette, president and CEO of American Textile Company, former Army Ranger and captain of the West Point gymnastics team
  • Ian Rosenberger, former “Survivor” contender and TV host, current CEO of Thread International
  • Tom Baker, Chief Community Affairs Officer for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Pittsburgh and Founder of Get Involved!, Inc.
SALA is endorsed by the Western Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic League (WPIAL) and the Pittsburgh Public Schools, and this year it is being supported by an Association for Applied Sports Psychology Community Outreach Grant. The initiative is coordinated by Dr. Kimball and Samantha Monda, Ph.D., of Robert Morris University.
After athletic directors and coaches nominated attendees, registration is now open for parents to enroll additional rising junior- or senior-year athletes – but, first, parents are asked to contact Dr. Kimball at (412) 432-3777 or email
