​‘Science 2013—Convergence’ Celebrates Exceptional Researchers, Innovative Technology

WHAT: Huda Y. Zoghbi, M.D., a renowned molecular geneticist whose work uncovered the genetic underpinnings of several neurological disorders, will accept the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine’s Dickson Prize in Medicine and deliver a talk about her work during Science 2013 – Convergence. The event, now in its 13th year, highlights the region’s academic and research strengths in science, engineering, medicine and computation. Science 2013 also includes presentations by some of Pittsburgh’s leading researchers, exhibits, poster sessions, a career development workshop, and a new technology showcase.
WHO: Plenary lectures will be delivered by guest scientists:
  • Dr. Zoghbi, professor in the Departments of Pediatrics, Molecular and Human Genetics, Neurology, and Neuroscience, and the Program in Developmental Biology at Baylor College of Medicine; director of the Jan and Dan Duncan Neurological Research Institute at Texas Children’s Hospital; and an investigator with the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, will deliver the Dickson Prize Lecture.
  • Subra Suresh, Sc.D., president, Carnegie Mellon University, will deliver the Provost Lecture.
  • Alexander Varshavsky, Ph.D., Howard and Gwen Laurie Smits Professor of Cell Biology, California Institute of Technology, will deliver the Mellon Lecture.
  • Napoleone Ferrara, M.D., Distinguished Professor of Pathology, University of California, San Diego, and senior deputy director for basic sciences, UC San Diego Moores Cancer Center, will deliver the Klaus Hofmann Lecture
