‘Girls on the Run’ of Magee-Womens Hospital to Honor National Essay Contest Winner

WHAT: Local fourth-grader Refa Garfidelya, a participant in the Girls on the Run chapter based at Magee-Womens Hospital of UPMC, will be honored as one of five winners of a national essay contest.
WHY: Refa’s response to the question, “How does Girls on the Run give you confidence to pursue your dreams?” earned her a $500 prize. Girls on the Run of Magee-Womens Hospital received $3,500 in scholarship money to support the 12-week program set to take place in the fall.
Girls on the Run is a non-profit youth development program for girls in third through eighth grade. Through a 24-lesson curriculum, girls learn to be confident, happy and healthy while training for a 5K running event. More than 700,000 girls throughout the United States and Canada participate in the program.
