Purple is the New Red: Norwin Students Create Awareness and Valentine Cards for Cancer Patients

WHAT: Norwin School District Students deliver Valentine cards to patients receiving cancer therapy
WHY: Purple is the official color for the American Cancer Society Relay for Life and team members, Tyler Funk and Zachary Waugh, were inspired to raise awareness and funds to fight cancer through their interactions with three teachers whose family members are coping with cancer. For this second annual “Purple Fighter Day” event, Hillcrest students created Valentine cards that will be distributed to cancer patients.
To raise funds, the students have been selling purple t-shirts and bracelets and organized a “purple out” at a Norwin basketball game. So far this year, they have raised more than $4,000 for cancer research.
Cancer unit staff will show their support during the card presentation by also wearing purple.
