Neurorehabilitation Services

Receiving a neurological disorder diagnosis or experiencing brain trauma can be physically and emotionally draining not only for the patient, but his or her support system as well. The challenges and adjustments that lie ahead are many, and the responsibility of care often rests heavily on nearby family or friends.

At UPMC Centers for Rehab Services, we walk alongside our patients and their families throughout the rehabilitation process in order to restore you or your family member to the highest quality of life.

What Is Neurorehabilitation?

Neurorehabilitation is a therapy program for patients who have experienced trauma or a medical diagnosis pertaining to the nervous system. Often trauma or a diagnosis of this nature cause physical disability or impairment which alter normal, day to day activities which neuro therapy seeks to improve.

Who Is a Candidate for Neurorehabilitation?

Our neurorehabilitation specialists focus on the comprehensive evaluation and treatment of numerous disorders of the nervous system. Specific trauma and disorders that benefit from neuro rehab include:

  • Neurological disorders, such as multiple sclerosis
  • Movement disorders, including Parkinson’s disease
  • Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease
  • Stroke
  • Infections of the brain, such as meningitis
  • Traumatic brain injuries (TBI)
  • Spinal cord injuries

Comprehensive Neurorehabilitation Treatment

The goal of each individualized rehabilitation plan is to restore physical performance and fitness to an optimal level. Critical to the therapy process is the engagement of family or friends to assist in these tasks at home. Depending on your current functional abilities and therapist’s initial evaluation, there are a variety of treatments and recovery exercises you may experience. Examples of treatments include:

  • Mobility improvement exercises
