Wound debridement is the removal of infected or nonviable tissue from the site of a wound to speed healing.
Depending on the wound’s severity, debridement may be performed at a patient’s bedside or in an operating room. It can be a primary treatment or one step in a treatment plan, such as debridement of a wound to prepare the area for bioengineered skin substitutes.
The treatment is recommended for severe infections and thick scarring. If you have diabetes or vascular disease, debridement may not be appropriate, but our experts will help weigh the risks and rewards of all potential treatments.
