The Aging Institute, directed by Dr. Toren Finkel, is a joint venture of the University of Pittsburgh and UPMC Senior Services. Its laboratories occupy the fourth and fifth floors of Bridgeside Point, a five-story research building on the 2nd Avenue campus of the University of Pittsburgh.
Renovations have been completed to approximately 12,000 square feet of lab space on the fourth floor with renovations to an additional 19,000 square feet of lab and office space on the fifth floor scheduled to commence in early 2018.
Once completed, the Institute will hold over 31,000 square feet of state-of-the-art facilities.
This particular research campus is home to a number of other clinical, translational and basic science research efforts including the McGowan Institute for Regenerative Medicine and the Microbiology and Molecular Genetics Basic Science Department.
The Aging Institute is part of UPMC and the Department of Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine (UPSOM) and brings together a multidisciplinary team of scientists having primary appointments in either a basic science or clinical division. This Institute is a highly collaborative and interactive environment with researchers focused on various disciplines including those studying the basic biology of aging (e.g. the role of DNA damage), as well as those individuals more focused on age-related diseases (e.g. Alzheimer’s disease, atherosclerosis).
