Some physicians, notes Gwendolyn Sowa, MD, PhD, have too often reached for the prescription pad to treat patients’ pain. Instead, Dr. Sowa works to advance therapies and alternative pain-treatment methods. She studies the mechanobiology of the spine in order to develop novel and personalized treatments for low back pain. Her research has shed new light on the mechanisms behind intervertebral disc degeneration and on the molecular biomarkers of low back pain. Through analysis of biomarkers and other means, Dr. Sowa investigates the effectiveness of certain activities, exercises, and other therapies for treating musculoskeletal conditions. Her work seeks to further rational, individualized treatments for musculoskeletal and neuromuscular conditions while facilitating more effective, efficient care.

Dr. Sowa received her MD and biochemistry PhD from the University of Wisconsin–Madison. She completed her physical medicine and rehabilitation residency at the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago and Northwestern University. She codirects the Ferguson Laboratory for Orthopaedic and Spine Research, where she leads a diverse group of biomedical engineers, clinician-scientists, and other researchers who practice a multidisciplinary approach to clinical spine research. In 2016, Dr. Sowa was appointed as the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Professor, an endowed professorship within the School of Medicine’s Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, of which she became chair that same year.
