About UPMC Hamot

UPMC Hamot, located in Erie, Pa., is a 424-bed non-profit tertiary care hospital and fully accredited Level II Trauma Center. The medical staff has over 500 physicians representing most specialties and subspecialties, and we have residency training programs in orthopaedic surgery, neurology, otolaryngology​, and emergency medicine.

UPMC Hamot is ranked #9 in Pennsylvania by U.S. News & World Report, and is the only hospital in Erie to be recognized by the publication.

Community Description

As the fourth largest city in Pennsylvania, Erie has an abundance of resources in culture, recreation, and education. Erie and UPMC Hamot overlook Presque Isle Bay and Peninsula. Lake Erie offers the perfect setting for boating, water skiing, scuba diving, wind surfing, sailing, and fishing. Close proximity to the Allegheny Mountains affords easy access to Alpine and Nordic skiing.

Cultural offerings include a symphony orchestra, ballet and dance companies, playhouse theatre groups, and the Presque Isle Downs and Casino. Erie is also home to professional baseball, basketball, and ice hockey teams.

For children, Erie offers a planetarium, the Erie Zoo, a Children’s Museum, community parks, an amusement park, and indoor and outdoor water parks.

Erie also has a selection of excellent public, private, and parochial schools, as well as four local colleges and universities.

Katie B​ool Shafer, MBA, MA
Katie Bool Shafer joined the recruitment team in 2017 as a physician recruiter. Katie recruits for UPMC Hamot as well as other UPMC hospitals located in the Northern Tier. Her primary recruitment specialties include bariatrics, non-invasive cardiology, colon and rectal, cardiovascular surgery, ENT, podiatry, general and trauma surgery, gastroenterology, neurology, neurosurgery, ob-gyn, pain management, palliative care, psychiatry, and urology. Katie is a member of the Association of Staff Physician Recruiters (ASPR).

Katie started her career with UPMC in 2015 as a communications specialist in clinical marketing and community relations, where she was responsible for supporting community initiatives and assisting in clinical marketing campaigns. She received her bachelor’s degree in communication studies, master’s degree in corporate communication, and master’s degree in business administration from Duquesne University.

Christine Yost
Christine Yost joined UPMC Hamot in February 2016 as a physician recruiter. Christine recruits for UPMC Hamot as well as other UPMC hospitals located in the Northern Tier. Her primary specialties include breast imaging, breast surgery, dermatology, emergency medicine, endocrinology, hospitalist, infectious disease, nephrology, orthopaedics, physiatry, plastic surgery, primary care and internal medicine, pulmonary medicine, critical care, radiology, rheumatology, and urgent care.

Prior to joining UPMC, Christine spent six years as the director of finance for the Erie BayHawks Basketball team. She received her bachelor's degree in accounting from Clarion University of Pennsylvania.
