Summer Scholars

UPMC Hamot is excited to offer a four-week, hands-on program for rising college juniors and seniors, or graduate students, planning on careers in medicine. The program will be limited to ten students entering their junior or senior year of college, or graduate students. Applicants must have a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.2 and must have applied to or plan to apply to medical school. It is open to residents of Erie, Crawford, Venango, and Chautauqua (NY) counties.

Applications for the UPMC Hamot Summer Scholars program will be accepted for the 2023 session. Click here for the application form (PDF). There is no cost to participate in the program. Participating students will gain a thorough understanding of concepts surrounding medical research and current trends in medicine. In addition, program objectives include helping students:

  • Refine their presentation, leadership, and communications skills
  • Learn more about current issues and challenges
  • Gain a real-world perspective of a career as a physician
  • Establish relationships with current physicians for future career guidance

UPMC Hamot physicians in both primary and specialty care will serve as mentors to the participating students.
