The pavilion provides additional capacity for the UPMC Hillman Cancer Center at UPMC Passavant, emergency department, and surgical services, as well as additional intensive care unit beds, progressive care unit beds, and medical-surgical unit beds. As the first LEED-certified hospital addition in the North Hills, UPMC Passavant’s pavilion is leading the way in environmentally sound construction. The pavilion features:

  • Natural lighting
  • Non-toxic materials
  • Water conservation methods, such as low-flush toilets
  • Special lighting designed to reduce light pollution

UPMC Hillman Cancer Center at UPMC Passavant

  • Advanced tertiary services (breast, lung, esophageal, upper gastrointestinal, pancreas, colorectal, and liver)

  • A separate and dedicated outside elevator to the UPMC Hillman Cancer Center
  • Windows in all chemoperfusion rooms to allow improved access, visibility, and natural lighting

  • 4D respiratory-gated radiation therapy

Emergency Department

  • Designed to trauma specifications
  • “Fast Track” area (for more minor medical issues)
  • Designated area for critical heart patients
  • State-of-the-art critical care rooms
  • Three trauma rooms
  • 26 acute treatment rooms
  • 10 bed observation area
  • Dedicated imaging services in fast-track area to keep patient flow and wait times to a minimum
Special features:
  • Stroke Telemedicine Program – emergency room physicians at both UPMC Passavant campuses have immediate, 24-hour access to experts at the UPMC Stroke Institute in Oakland through state-of-the-art videoconferencing technology

  • Two rooms dedicated to image-guided procedures
  • Satellite pharmacy and pathology labs for improved efficiency

Capability for high-end cardiac surgical procedures, including mitral valve repairs, coronary artery revascularization, aortic valve replacement and left ventricular reconstruction.

Main Entrance

The main entrance of the hospital has been redesigned to improve patient flow. The entrance, which wraps around the hospital's signature glass atrium, provides access to both sides of the central registration area. Separate arrival and departure areas help to improve traffic flow.

Third Floor

16 critical care beds for medical and surgical cardiac patients.

  • Nurse and physician workstations located outside patient rooms
  • Identical rooms - all 16 of the ICU rooms have the exact same layout; this improves patient safety, noise reduction, and family space
  • Staff lounges are located on the outside walls for infusion of natural light
  • Private family rooms
  • All rooms are Americans with Disabilities Act-compliant and feature three zones that have been built to accommodate the individual needs of the clinician, patient, and family
  • Spacious and comfortable waiting areas offering wireless Internet access, blankets, pillows, and food and beverage carts
