PITTSBURGH, Nov. 1, 2016 - Irish hospital executive David Beirne has been named vice president of UPMC International and country manager for Ireland at UPMC, which has operated an advanced radiation therapy center in Ireland for the past decade. Beirne officially starts his position today.

Beirne previously served as chief executive officer at the Whitfield Clinic, the private hospital in Waterford that also is home to the UPMC Whitfield Cancer Centre. Before joining the clinic, Beirne worked in a variety of finance leadership roles at such companies as McInerney Plc in Dublin, Glanbia Plc and PricewaterhouseCoopers.

Initially, Beirne will be responsible for overseeing the development of the joint venture cancer center in Cork that UPMC recently announced in partnership with Bon Secours Health System. Expected to open in 2019, the center will offer advanced radiation cancer treatments on the Bon Secours campus.

Beirne also will be responsible for integrating the UPMC Whitfield Cancer Centre with the new facility in Cork to ensure the sharing of best practices and operational efficiencies. In addition, he will lead business development activities in Ireland and other regions of the world.

"We have known David for six years as a UPMC Whitfield Cancer Centre board member, where he is well-respected for his financial and operational acumen," said Charles Bogosta, president of UPMC International. "He has established very strong relationships with physicians, government leaders and insurers, and we are excited to have him leading our expansion efforts in Ireland as we bring world-class cancer care close to home for our patients there."

UPMC International works in more than a dozen countries worldwide, offering a wide variety of services, including hospital management, implementation of electronic medical records, physician and staff training, and facility and equipment planning. As a leader in such specialties as organ transplantation, cancer, sports medicine, neurosurgery and emergency medicine, UPMC helps partners around the world provide high-quality, personalized care to patients in their own communities.
