PITTSBURGH, Aug. 30, 2016 – UPMC provided $892 million in total IRS-defined “community benefits” last year, an average of $2.4 million per day. The region’s leading health care system recently released its Community Benefits Report 2015-2016, showing UPMC provided more care to the region’s most vulnerable citizens than any other health care institution.
The $892 million total includes $313 million in charity care and unreimbursed amounts for programs for the poor—covering nearly 70 percent of the region’s charity care, more than double all other hospitals combined, and far exceeding UPMC’s 40 percent share of hospital patients in the region. The $892 million also includes $217 million in community health programs and donations, and $362 million for medical research and education.
“It is extraordinary to note that UPMC touches 7 out of 10 people who live in western Pennsylvania: from Pittsburgh to Erie, to Altoona, and many places in between,” said G. Nicholas Beckwith III, chairman, UPMC Board of Directors. “UPMC’s mission for more than 30 years has been to serve the region’s diverse neighborhoods and communities large and small with the highest quality care to the sickest and most vulnerable members of our communities.”

Community Impact By The Numbers:
• UPMC touches the lives of 7 out of 10 people who live in the region through inpatient or outpatient care, insurance services or employment.
• 3 out of 4 babies born to low-income families in Allegheny County are delivered at UPMC, which also cares for 9 out of 10 children from low-income families in the county.
• UPMC provides inpatient care to 8 out of 10 residents of the 10 poorest neighborhoods in Allegheny County.
• UPMC associates personally contributed $2.4 million to the United Way campaign in 2015, and devoted 860,000 hours to community health service.
• UPMC continues to deliver on its $100 million pledge to the Pittsburgh Promise, which enables Pittsburgh public schools graduates to pursue college and helps to develop a highly educated work force.
• UPMC has a powerful effect on the regional economy with a total annual economic impact of $26.5 billion.
