UPMC Melanoma Research to Benefit from Annual Bicycle Ride

WHAT: The Woiner Foundation of Pittsburgh will host the 5th Annual 3-2-1 Ride, a family friendly and competitive bicycle ride that will directly benefit melanoma research at UPMC Hillman Cancer Center. Cyclists of all skill levels are welcome, with four different routes ranging from 7 to 80 miles.

Every cent of every rider-raised dollar helps to support cancer research and patient care. To date, The Woiner Foundation has donated $105,000 to the UPMC Melanoma and Skin Cancer Program under the direction of John Kirkwood, M.D., where more than 20 faculty researchers focus on melanoma research, leading multiple local, national and international studies that advance new therapies for the treatment of melanoma, which claims more than 7,000 lives each year in the United States alone.

WHY: The Woiner Foundation was established in 2013 by husband and wife team Ric and Jessica Fera, and Jessica’s mother, Rita Woiner. The trio pledged then to fight melanoma and pancreatic cancer in memory and in honor of multiple family members: Jessica's father, Tim Woiner, died in 2010 of melanoma; Ric is a two-time melanoma survivor; and Rita passed away in 2014 from pancreatic cancer.
