ADHD Services and Treatment at UPMC

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) can be challenging for both you and your child.

When ADHD is not treated, your child may struggle at school or at home. They may have trouble paying attention, managing emotions, or getting along with others. Over time, they may have trouble in relationships, make risky choices, or face challenges at work and in daily life.

That’s why finding and treating ADHD early is so important.

At UPMC, our mental health professionals support children and families every step of the way. We provide caring, personalized services for children, teens, and young adults ages 5 to 25.

ADHD Services We Offer at UPMC

With the right treatment, your child can succeed at school, at work, and in everyday life.

We offer comprehensive evaluations and specialized treatment for ADHD at all UPMC Western Behavioral Health outpatient locations. Our team partners with you to create a treatment plan that fits your child’s unique needs.

How Do We Diagnose and Treat ADHD?

Every child with ADHD is different. That’s why your child’s care is personalized. We look at age, symptoms, strengths, and daily challenges. Our goal is to help your child do well at home, in school, and with friends.

We offer a variety of services for children, teens, and young adults ages 5 through 25.

Comprehensive evaluations

We gather information from you, your child’s teachers, and clinicians to understand their symptoms and how ADHD affects daily life.

Behavioral therapy and training

  • Parent education — Teaches you practical ways to support your child at home and school.
  • Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) — Helps teens and young adults improve organizational, planning, and time management skills.
  • Parent-teen sessions — Helps you and your teen communicate better and work through challenges together.

Medication management

Our licensed psychiatrists help you decide if medication is right for your child and monitor treatment over time.

Group therapy

Study skills and college transition groups help teens and young adults build confidence, improve social skills, learn self-advocacy, and develop independence.

How do you treat a child with ADHD?

Treatment won’t cure ADHD, but it can be effective in managing symptoms. Early diagnosis, treatment, and support can lead to better outcomes for your child.

Working with a mental health professional who specializes in ADHD can help your child learn coping skills, improve behavior, and handle challenges more effectively.

Can ADHD in children be treated without medication?

Yes, ADHD in children can be treated without medication. But the effectiveness of this approach can vary greatly from child to child.

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends children under age 6 start treatments that do not include medication, such as behavioral therapy, parent training, and educational support. For children ages 6 and older, the AAP recommends combining these strategies with medication.

Can a child with ADHD do well in a typical school setting?

Yes, most children with ADHD can attend — and succeed — in a regular classroom with the right support. Accommodations, such as extra time for tests, seating that limits distractions, and movement breaks, can be very helpful.

Why Choose UPMC for ADHD Care?

At UPMC, we understand that ADHD doesn’t look the same in all children. We also know that children with ADHD have different needs as they grow older. That’s why we take time to get to know your child and craft a treatment plan that’s the best fit.

Our team of specialists is here to help your child succeed and thrive at home, school, and social settings.
