Treatments at UPMC's Ear and Hearing Center

Depending on your hearing or ear condition, your doctor at the center will work with you to determine the best treatment plan.

Your treatment may consist of one or several of the following:

  • Surgery
  • Medicine through intratympanic therapies
  • Hearing aids
  • Implants

The following are just some of the surgical treatments we perform at the UPMC Ear and Hearing Center:

Ear and Hearing Medicine (Intratympanic Therapies)

This ear and hearing treatment involves medication being injected through the tympanic membrane (eardrum) ;into the middle ear to treat certain conditions of hearing loss or dizziness. You may need just a single injection or a series of injections.

Gentamicin injections

Intratympanic injections of gentamicin is a vestibulotoxic medication that chemically reduces function of the inner ear. This is used for treatment of inner ear disorders causing frequent vertigo.

Steroid injections

Intratympanic injections of steroids is used to treat sudden hearing loss, when the patient is seen near the time of onset.
