Respite Care Program
The purpose of the Respite Care Program is to give unpaid caregivers a short break or “respite” from the care they provide to physically or cognitively-impaired elderly family members.
The Respite Care Program subsidizes a portion of the daily fees for a brief admission to an appropriate UPMC Senior Communities facility.
Research shows that family members provide nearly 83 percent of the necessary care for an elderly family member. These unpaid caregivers (most frequently a daughter or spouse) must often balance concerns for their own families, their careers, and caregiving responsibilities.
As the health and demands of the care recipient increases, so does the stress and burn-out rate of their caregivers. UPMC’s Respite Care Program can provide needed respite for seniors who meet income eligibility guidelines.
There is no sustained funding source for this project and generous contributions would help to fill this void.
