Chronic Osteomyelitis​

Osteomyelitis is a bone or bone marrow infection, caused by bacteria or other germs. It can occur after:

  • Injury
  • Bone surgery
  • An infection that has spread from elsewhere on the body

Risk factors include:

  • Diabetes
  • Poor blood supply
  • Dialysis

Chronic osteomyelitis can lead to bone hardening or deformity.

In adults, osteomyelitis most often affects the:

  • Feet
  • Spine
  • Hips

Advanced treatment at a wound healing center, such as systemic hyperbaric oxygen therapy, can increase blood flow to the infected area and help speed healing.
