G. Nicolas Beckwith, chairman of the UPMC Board of Directors, and his wife Dotty, first began supporting innovation in patient-centered care at UPMC in 1991 to express their gratitude for the care Dotty received after being hospitalized for a medical emergency at UPMC Shadyside.
Eleven years after their initial gift of $500,000 to support innovation in nursing, the Beckwiths made a transformational gift of $5 million, which was matched by UPMC, to fund the Institute’s visionary programs in three key areas: Frontline Innovation, Shared Decision Making, and Bench at Bedside.
Today, the exciting and groundbreaking initiatives of The Beckwith Institute enable those at the forefront of care at UPMC — our doctors, nurses, pharmacists, technicians, therapists, and staff — to identify and implement innovative ways to ensure that UPMC offers the safest and most quality care possible, today and tomorrow.
