Michel S. Makaroun, MD Professor and Chair, Division of Vascular Surgery University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine Co-Director, UPMC Heart and Vascular Institute
Dr. Michel Makaroun received his medical degree from the American University of Beirut, where he also completed a surgical internship and residency program, before coming to the University of Pittsburgh for a fellowship in vascular surgery.
Dr. Makaroun is certified by the American Board of Surgery in surgery, with a certificate of special qualification in vascular surgery, and has a primary interest in the endovascular and surgical repair of abdominal aortic aneurysms.
He has served as the president of the Society for Clinical Vascular Surgery, the Eastern Vascular Society, and the Association of Program Directors in Vascular Surgery.
Dr. Makaroun is extensively published, presenting his research at conferences around the world. Dr. Makaroun has been with the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and UPMC for over 30 years. |

Georges Al-Khoury, MD Assistant professor of surgery
Dr. Georges Al-Khoury received his medical degree from Lebanese University in Lebanon, and completed his residency at Lebanese University Faculty of Medical Sciences. He then completed fellowships in general surgery at SUNY Medical Center and in vascular surgery at UPMC. Dr. Al- Khoury, who joined UPMC in 2009, is board certified in general and vascular surgery.

Efthymios Avgerinos, MD Assistant professor of surgery
Dr. Efthymios Avgerinos is certified by the European Board of Vascular Surgery in surgery and vascular surgery, and is a member of the American Society for Clinical Vascular Surgery. Dr. Avgerinos completed his vascular surgery residency at the University of Athens in Greece, while he had clinical fellowships in London, UK and Frankfurt, Germany.
He has published numerous academic articles in vascular and endovascular surgery and his work has been recognized with several national and international awards. Dr. Avgerinos’ surgical interests are in peripheral vascular disease, aortic aneurysms, venous diseases, and vascular access. |

Rabih Chaer, MD Associate professor of surgery
Dr. Rabih Chaer, a board-certified vascular surgeon, completed his surgical training at the University of Illinois in Chicago. Dr. Chaer completed his vascular training at the New York Presbyterian Hospital of Columbia and Cornell, and joined UPMC in 2006. An internationally invited lecturer, Dr. Chaer specializes in surgery and vascular disease, and more specifically, aneurysms, carotid dissection, atherectomies, deep vein thromboses, and limb preservation.

Ellen D. Dillavou, MD Associate professor of surgery Head, Venous Services, Division of Vascular Surgery
Dr. Ellen Dillavou, a board-certified vascular surgeon, received her medical degree from the University of Arizona, and completed her postgraduate training at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, as well as the University of Pittsburgh.
In addition to directing venous services for the division of Vascular Surgery, Dr. Dillavou is currently researching the treatment of perforating veins and their role in leg pain and ulcers. She has received a Young Investigator's award from the American College of Phlebology. |

Eric Hager, MD Assistant professor of surgery
Dr. Eric Hager earned his medical degree from Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia, then a residency at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital. He completed a vascular surgery fellowship at UPMC and joined the division of Vascular Surgery in 2012.
Dr. Hager has won various teaching awards through his training, and is a member of Alpha Omega Alpha, the medical honor society. He is board-certified in general surgery, and specializes in treatment of venous disease.

Stanley A. Hirsch, MD Clinical associate professor of surgery
Dr. Stanley Hirsch received his medical degree from the University of Pittsburgh and completed his post-graduate training at UPMC Montefiore and Boston City Hospital. Dr. Hirsch is a vascular surgeon who has practiced in the Pittsburgh area for more than 30 years.

Geetha Jeyabalan, MD Assistant professor of surgery
Dr. Geetha Jeyabalan joined UPMC in 2011, and is board certified in both general and vascular surgery. Dr. Jeyabalan completed her training in both specialties at UPMC between 2002 and 2011, as well as a research fellowship. She earned her medical degree from the University of Michigan Medical School.

Steven A. Leers, MD Associate professor of surgery
Dr. Steven Leers earned his medical degree from the University of Massachusetts in 1978. He completed his surgical training and vascular surgery fellowship at the University of Massachusetts Medical School, followed by endovascular training at the Cleveland Clinic.
Dr. Leers came to UPMC in 2006, and is currently medical director of the UPMC Vascular Laboratories. Along with full service aortic, carotid, endovascular and open vascular surgery, his particular interest and expertise is in the areas of non-invasive vascular testing, lower extremity revascularization, and dialysis access surgery. He is board-certified in general and vascular surgery. |

Luke K. Marone, MD Associate professor of surgery
Dr. Luke Marone earned his medical degree from Tufts University. He then completed a residency, then a clinical vascular surgery fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital.
Dr. Marone joined UPMC in 2003 and was named chief, Division of Vascular Surgery at UPMC Passavant in February 2012. He is board-certified in general and vascular surgery.
He has special expertise in endovascular lower extremity interventions. Dr. Marone is a strong researcher, and has authored several publications in the Journal of Vascular Surgery. |

Madhusudanan Nair, MD Clinical assistant professor of surgery
Dr. Madhusudanan Nair earned his medical degree from Grant Medical College in India. He completed his surgical residency and vascular fellowship at St. Francis Medical Center in Pittsburgh.
Dr. Madhusudanan joined UPMC's division of vascular surgery in 2007. Dr. Nair has been president of the medical staff at St. Francis and UPMC McKeesport, and he is board-certified in surgery. |

Ulka Sachdev, MD Assistant professor of surgery
Dr. Ulka Sachdev obtained a medical degree at Mt. Sinai University and completed her residency and vascular surgery fellowship at the medical center there. She is board-certified in general and vascular surgery.
Dr. Sachdev was a past recipient of the Wylie Scholar Award from the Foundation for Accelerated Vascular Research and Vascular Cures and also received a grant from the NIH to conduct research in vascular disease treatments. She joined UPMC in 2006, and specializes in the treatment of venous disease. |

Dr. Michael Singh, who joined UPMC in 2012, completed his medical degree and a general surgery residency at the SUNY at Buffalo. He completed a vascular surgery fellowship at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center. Dr. Singh is a fellow in the American College of Surgeons, and a certified registered physician in vascular interpretation. He is board-certified in general and vascular surgery.
He has received patient care and teaching awards throughout his career, and authored numerous peer reviewed publications. His areas of expertise include the management of complex aortic disease, venous insufficiency, thoracic outlet syndrome, and peripheral arterial occlusive disease. |

Bryan W. Tillman, MD, PhD Assistant professor of surgery
Dr. Bryan Tillman received his medical degree at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. While there, he also completed a Ph.D. in the field of Gene Therapy.
Dr. Tillman completed a General Surgery residency at the Ohio State University, and a post-doctoral research fellowship at the Wake Forest Institute for Regenerative Medicine. Also at Wake Forest, he completed a clinical fellowship in Vascular Surgery before joining the Division of Vascular Surgery.

Edith Tzeng, MD Professor of surgery
Dr. Edith Tzeng earned her medical degree from the University of Chicago. At the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, Dr. Tzeng completed her internship, residency, research fellowship, and clinical fellowship.
She joined UPMC in 2001 and in 2003, was named Chief of Vascular Surgery at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Pittsburgh. Dr. Tzeng is a proficient researcher and has published several articles in professional journals.
