Condition Help is a 24/7 patient safety hotline that patients and support persons can call when there is:
- An emergency when patients or support persons cannot get the attention of hospital staff.
- A communication breakdown with the care team in how care is given.
- Uncertainty over what needs to be done.
Why Does UPMC Have Condition Help?
In the early 2000s, leaders at UPMC Shadyside saw a vital need for quickly addressing communication problems in patient care. They launched Condition Help after 18-month-old Josie King died from medical errors at another East Coast hospital.
Condition Help empowers patients and their support persons to speak up when they feel something isn’t right. Calling the hotline can help prevent medical errors and communication breakdowns in patient care.
The program started at UPMC Shadyside and later expanded throughout the entire health system.
