Intraperitoneal (IP) Chemotherapy for Gynecologic Cancer

UPMC Content 3

Intraperitoneal (IP) chemotherapy is a regional chemotherapy procedure in which surgeons insert a port in your abdomen to deliver chemotherapy.

Because the chemotherapy is confined to your abdomen, side effects to healthy tissue are minimal.

IP Chemotherapy for Treating Gynecologic Cancer

IP chemotherapy may be an ideal treatment for gynecologic tumors if they are:

  • Confined to the abdomen
  • Too advanced to remove surgically

Hyperthermic Intraperitoneal Chemoperfusion (HIPEC)

HIPEC circulates heated chemotherapy through your abdomen, raising the temperature to between 105 and 107.6 F (40.6 and 42 C).

Heating the chemotherapy can increase the penetration into the layers of the cells in the abdomen.
