Tomosynthesis (3D Mammography)

Tomosynthesis, also referred to as 3D mammography, is an imaging procedure that uses low-energy x-rays to create a 3D image of the breasts.

While conventional mammography takes pictures of the breast from two angles — up and down, and left and right — tomosynthesis takes multiple pictures from different angles. Benefits of tomosynthesis include improved imaging for patients with dense breast tissue. Tomosynthesis can also decrease recall rates for screening mammography.

Board-certified radiologists at Magee-Womens Imaging may use tomosynthesis in conjunction with conventional mammography to provide the most optimal image of your breasts for a clear diagnosis.

The actual tomosynthesis procedure is no different than having a conventional mammogram and typically take 30 minutes to complete.
