Navigating Your Breast Cancer Journey

UPMC Content 3

How Can the Young Women's Breast Cancer Program Benefit Me?

We can help you navigate through situations and services you should consider before, during, or after treatment, including:

Genetic Counseling and Testing

If you are concerned about a personal or family history of cancer, the Cancer Genetics Program offers cancer risk assessments, screening, and genetic counseling.

Call 1-800-454-8156 for more information or to make an appointment.

Fertility and Reproductive Options

Cancer treatments may cause temporary or permanent infertility. The clinicians and researchers at UPMC and the Magee-Womens Research institute can coordinate with your physician to provide fertility consultation, information, and fertility therapies to avoid or cope with this possible side effect.

For more information, visit the Center for Fertility and Reproductive Endocrinology website, or call 412-641-1600.

 Holistic Care

The Center for Integrative Medicine at UPMC Shadyside provides multidisciplinary holistic care to patients with pain, as well as physical health and stress-related problems that can often accompany cancer treatment and recovery.

For more information, call 412-623-3023.

Breast Reconstruction

If you require or prefer segmental or full mastectomy as part of your treatment, you may be interested in breast reconstruction. Magee’s video, “Knowledge is Power: Breast Reconstruction, can help you understand breast reconstruction and the choices you may have. (see video by click on the video thumbnail in the right hand column.)

Exercise

UPMC’s DVD, “Strength & Courage: Exercises for Breast Cancer Survivors,” provides a series of exercises specifically designed to help breast cancer patients regain full mobility, strength, and muscle tone after surgery.

For more information, visit the Strength and Courage website.

LiveWell Survivorship Program

LiveWell helps cancer survivors and families address the unique opportunities and challenges in life after cancer.

Support Services

Magee offers a range of supportive services designed to meet the physical and emotional needs of patients with cancer and their loved ones.

Behavioral Medicine

UPMC psychologists and psychiatrists work with you and your physicians to help you cope with the stresses associated with cancer treatment and to adjust to life after cancer.

Survivor
Give-Back Opportunities

Magee offers cancer survivors various opportunities to support and counsel other patients with cancer, sharing first-hand experiences of diagnosis, treatment, and life after cancer.

A great resource available online is the "Knowledge is Power: Understanding Breast Cancer" video series. This video series, created by Magee, explains what breast cancer is, how it is treated, and what decisions you may need to make during the course of your treatment.
