Volunteering at UPMC Mercy

UPMC Mercy is looking for volunteers who desire to be of service and have a compassionate heart, and people who will support us in carrying on our mission of compassionate care for the sick and suffering.

Volunteers include adults who may be retirees, homemakers, businesspeople, parents, and grandparents — anyone with talents to share. Weekday, morning, and afternoon shifts are open. College students also are welcome.

Examples of volunteer opportunities may include the following:

  • Gift Shop
    Volunteers greet and assist customers, assist at the cash register, and replenish stock as needed.
  • Gift Cart
    Volunteers service patients by making rounds to patient areas with the magazine and candy cart.
  • Special Projects
    Positions in this category are called on as an as-needed basis. The work includes mailings and other types of periodic tasks that departments seek volunteer assistance to complete.
  • Same Day Surgery
    Volunteers provide service at the reception desk as patients arrive and assist the staff with various clerical tasks required for the patients coming in for surgery and other procedures. They also escort family members to waiting areas and act as a liaison person between staff and family members as needed.
  • Information Guides
    Volunteers provide directional information to patients and visitors and escort them to appropriate hospital areas as needed.
  • Mail Room
    Volunteers provide service by sorting and delivering patient mail and readdressing mail for patients who have been discharged from the hospital. .
  • Emergency Department
    Volunteers meet and greet patients and their families, assist the staff by providing comfort measures for patients in the Emergency Department, and act as messengers to hospital departments. Retired nurses, as well as college students who are pursuing a medical-related degree, also are placed in this department.
  • Patient Visitors
    Volunteer retired nurses visit patients, talk with them and listen to them, offer information on services that are available to patients, and act as a liaison with the unit staff as needed.
  • Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit (CVICU) Waiting Room Host
    Volunteers provide hospitality and service to families of patients in the Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit waiting area. They offer information on hospital services available to families, guide them to various areas of the hospital, and act as a liaison as needed with the unit staff regarding visiting hours and other information.
