Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic of UPMC

UPMC Bipolar Institute

Based at Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic of UPMC Presbyterian Shadyside in Pittsburgh, PA, the UPMC Bipolar Institute provides psychiatric services across the life span. The Bipolar Institute conducts basic science, clinical, and mental health services and is an international training center for the application of research-based and patient-centered treatments.

Comprehensive Consultation Services at the Bipolar Institute

The Bipolar Institute provides comprehensive assessments, expert diagnostic neurological, medical, and psychological assessments of individuals with bipolar disorder. It’s staffed by a multidisciplinary team of behavioral health and medical professionals who focus exclusively on the treatment of individuals diagnosed with bipolar disorder, and partner with them and their families to help them achieve the wellness goals they set for themselves. Our accumulated clinical and research experience with bipolar disorder is unmatched. We understand the impact that bipolar disorder has on personal and family life.

Consultations are available for children, adolescents, adults, and seniors. A consultation can help physicians, their patients, and families achieve diagnostic clarity and formulate a treatment plan, or help people who are not satisfied with their present treatment identify new, research-based options. In most cases, individuals and their physicians can enact these new options back in their home communities.

The Bipolar Institute is directed by Ellen Frank, PhD, Professor of Psychiatry and Psychology, University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and Boris Birmaher, MD, and Professor of Psychiatry, University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine.
