David's Cancer Story

David Story Banner

David was diagnosed with peritoneal carcinomatosis, a rare form of abdominal cancer. Physicians told him that he should pursue end of life care, as his condition was not something they could treat. But David refused to give up; he found UPMC Hillman Cancer Center, a leader in hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemoperfusion (HIPEC), an advanced treatment for cancers like David’s.

Hillman patients have access to innovative treatments, all backed by the latest scientific research. In fact, the National Cancer Institute – the nation’s authority on cancer – designates Hillman as one of only three Comprehensive Cancer Centers in Pennsylvania.

Erin's High-Risk Pregnancy Story

Erin Story Banner

During Erin’s first pregnancy, she suffered a preterm loss at 17 weeks. When she was ready to try again, she went to the experts at UPMC Magee-Womens Hospital’s Division of Maternal Fetal Medicine (MFM) who specialize in high-risk pregnancy care.

Erin remained a patient with Magee's MFM group for her second, third, and fourth pregnancies. Each pregnancy came with different complications – short cervix and cerclage (second); gestational diabetes (third); and placenta previa and a small bleed (fourth) – but Erin and her husband now have three healthy children. They are thankful for the care they received from their MFM specialists.

Robert's Pulmonology Story

Robert Story Banner

Robert started to experience severe respiratory issues. He had to stop to catch his breath while doing even the most routine tasks, like showering. As his breathing issues got worse, he had to give up playing golf, softball, and other activities he enjoyed.

He received care at the VA Pittsburgh Healthcare System. As his doctors tracked the decline of his lung function, they began considering lung transplantation and turned to UPMC.

Experts at UPMC treated Robert's condition by implanting a bronchial valve. Thanks to this innovative procedure, Robert now can manage his COPD and emphysema. More importantly, he is an active, present husband again.

At the UPMC Comprehensive Lung Center, clinicians use the most advanced techniques when diagnosing, managing, and treating a wide range of pulmonary conditions and respiratory disorders.
