Showing We Care | 2018 UPMC Community Benefits Report

UPMC provided $1.2 billion in IRS-defined community benefits in 2018. These efforts include more than 3,000 community programs, charity and other costs of care for those in need, and support for research and education.

In partnership with a wide range of community organizations, we are working to improve the health of the communities we serve by providing outstanding patient care and addressing the most pressing health needs.

UPMC also serves as a powerful engine of progress and growth that helps to strengthen Pennsylvania’s economy. UPMC contributes nearly all of the hospital-funded research in western Pennsylvania and nearly half of all hospital-funded research in the entire state. Our hospitals and academic medical centers serve as important training grounds for future healthcare leaders. In many communities, the local hospital is the leading source of jobs and helps support other local businesses.
