UPMC Hillman Cancer Center is National Cancer Institute-Designated Comprehensive Cancer Center. The National Cancer Institute (NCI) is the country's leading authority on cancer. There are only 57 NCI-Designated Comprehensive Cancer Centers in the United States.
Comprehensive Cancer Center designation is earned — not paid for or determined by peer nomination. Centers earn the distinction through excellence in research across multiple branches of science and ongoing community education and outreach activities.
Receiving treatment at an NCI-Designated Comprehensive Cancer Center can mean better outcomes for patients. A 2015 study of individuals with newly diagnosed adult-onset cancer showed that patients who received treatment from a Comprehensive Cancer Center had better outcomes than those treated at cancer centers without this designation.
