UPMC Hamot offers a full range of kidney transplant services in Erie, from evaluation and surgery to posttransplant care. We partner closely with the UPMC Kidney and Pancreas Transplant Program of the Thomas E. Starzl Transplantation Institute. Through this partnership, we provide care from some of the leading transplant experts in the world.
UPMC Hamot is one of the few locations outside of Pittsburgh where UPMC offers kidney transplants. Transplants are a lifesaving option for end-stage kidney disease. We also offer living-donor kidney transplant, which has various benefits. Those benefits include shortened wait times on the national transplant waiting list and better long-term outcomes.

UPMC Living Donor Champion Program
At UPMC, we understand that asking someone to be your living donor can be an overwhelming challenge. We provide one-on-one support and resources for patients who are working to find a living donor.
The UPMC Living Donor Champion Program is designed to help you:
- Learn more about who can become your living donor.
- Speak to your family and friends about living donation and your need to find a donor.
- Identify resources and strategies for finding a suitable living donor.
UPMC Donor Exchange Program
For people who have found a potential living donor but are not a match, UPMC offers living-donor kidney exchanges. Exchanges occur through the UPMC Donor Exchange Program.
If the incompatible living donor agrees to take part in an exchange, doctors will “swap" recipients with another living donor. This allows both patients the lifesaving care they need.

Matthew and Courtney's Story
An autoimmune disease caused significant damage to Matthew's kidneys. His sister, Courtney, learned that he needed a kidney transplant and registered to be his living donor. She was a match to donate to her brother. Courtney drove 10 hours from her home in North Carolina to UPMC Hamot for the transplant.
“Now, I'm 28 and spend a lot of time outdoors and can do physical labor at my job that involves roadwork," Matthew says. “I can't thank Courtney enough for giving me the chance to live a full life and to be able to spend time with my family."
