Staying healthy during the winter months can be a challenge due to harsh winter weather, seasonal flu, and being stuck indoors most of the time. Fortunately, a few strategies can help you eliminate your winter distresses.
Don’t Get Sick
- Boost your immunity by getting adequate sleep, exercising daily, and eating a diet of natural unprocessed food including vegetables and whole grains.
- Carry tissues and use them to catch your coughs and sneezes.
- Wash your hands regularly with soap and water to prevent the spread of germs.
- Get a flu vaccination. It is recommended for children at least six months old, people 65 years and older, people with respiratory-related conditions, pregnant women, and people who live with or care for others who are at high risk of developing serious complications.
Stay in Shape
- Explore outdoor winter activities such as ice skating, snowboarding, or even a brisk winter walk in the park.
- Indoor pools, gyms, and fitness centers are great places to exercise away from the cold.
- Try exercise video games that you can follow along in front of a TV.
Stay warm
- Install weather stripping around your windows. Draw your curtains at dusk and keep your doors closed to block out drafts.
- Have your heating system, fireplaces, and chimneys checked to make sure they are clean, working properly, and ventilated to the outside.
- Have regular hot drinks, hot soup, and eat at least one hot meal a day.
- Wear appropriating outdoor clothing to prevent frostbite.
- Avoid traveling when the weather service has issued advisories.
