Dr. Smith’s clinical interests include interventional cardiology, complex coronary intervention, transcatheter mitral and tricuspid valve therapies, and catheter-based treatments of adult congenital heart disease. Dr. Smith maintains one of the largest transcatheter-edge-to-edge repair practice volumes in the state of Pennsylvania and surrounding mid-Atlantic region. He has been a principal investigator on numerous interventional cardiology device trials.
Dr. Smith earned his medical degree at the University of California, San Francisco and completed his subsequent internal medicine residency, cardiology fellowship and interventional cardiology fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital. Dr. Smith joined Pitt’s faculty in 1994 and, in addition to his faculty appointment, serves as associate chief of cardiology for diversity, equity and inclusion in Pitt’s Division of Cardiology.
He has been extremely active in the Pennsylvania chapter of the American College of Cardiology serving as a past Chapter Governor and previously receiving a distinguished service award. In addition, Dr. Smith has actively sought to battle health disparities through his active involvement in the Association of Black Cardiologists and through grassroots work in underserved communities around Pittsburgh.
