Marshall W. Webster, M.D.

Marshall W. Webster, M.D., serves as senior vice president of UPMC, focusing on matters related to physician recruitment and practices, cultivating physician relationships, and enhancing collaboration with community hospitals.

Previously, he was president of the Physician Services Division and the University of Pittsburgh Physicians, the clinical practice plan of the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine clinical faculty. Webster is a past president of the medical staff of UPMC Presbyterian Hospital, and currently serves on the hospital’s board of directors.

Webster attended Pennsylvania State University as an undergraduate and he received his medical degree from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. Following an internship at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, he completed his surgical residency at the University of Pittsburgh and is board certified in general, thoracic and vascular surgery.

After two years of active duty as a surgeon in the U.S. Navy, he returned to the University of Pittsburgh, where he was a professor of surgery and holder of the Mark M. Ravitch Chair of Surgery. Webster also has previously served as chief of vascular surgery at UPMC, engaging in clinical practice and research with a primary interest in cerebrovascular and aortic aneurysm disease. He is a past residency director of the general surgery residency at UPMC. He is the author or co-author of more than 150 journal articles and book chapters.

Webster is a past president of the Pittsburgh Surgical Society and the Southwestern Pennsylvania Chapter of the American College of Surgeons, for which he served as a national governor for six years. He is also a past president of the Society for Clinical Vascular Surgery and has held leadership positions in a number of other national professional organizations. Webster also served on the board of the Pennsylvania State Patient Safety Authority and has a long-standing interest and commitment to patient safety and quality care.
