Michael A. Mathier, MD

Dr. Mathier received his medical degree from Columbia University, followed by completing his internal medicine residency, cardiology fellowship, and advanced heart failure fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts.

Since joining UPMC in 2000, Dr. Mathier has served in increasingly influential leadership roles within the UPMC Heart and Vascular Institute as well as in other roles for the institution, including Program Director of the Cardiology Fellowship and Clinical Director of Cardiology. In his current role as Clinical Director of the UPMC Heart and Vascular Institute, Dr. Mathier oversees clinical operations across the service line, his oversight ranging from Western and Central Pennsylvania and beyond into Southwestern New York and Western Maryland.

Dr. Mathier is focused on improving the integration of cardiology and cardiac surgery within and between UPMC Heart and Vascular Institute hospital-based and outpatient sites, with the overarching goal of improving quality of care, clinical outcomes, service line communication and optimal utilization of resources. Dr. Mathier is also heavily involved in medical student education, consistently receiving accolades for his mentorship, and has published over 100 peer-reviewed manuscripts.
