WASHINGTON, Pa. – UPMC Washington is expanding access to specialized neurological care close to home with the launch of a new hospital inpatient tele-neurosurgery consultation service. Using secure video technology, UPMC neurosurgery specialists provide real‑time consultations for hospitalized patients with spine or intracranial (brain‑related) conditions, working directly with the hospital care team at the patient’s bedside.Through this model of care, hospital teams seamlessly consult with advanced practice providers (APPs) specializing in neurosurgery, supported by attending neurosurgeons Vincent Miele, M.D., Edward Andrews, M.D. and David Fernandes-Cabral. M.D. This collaborative approach helps ensure timely expert clinical input without requiring patient transfers solely for consultation purposes.
“This service is another important step in strengthening the level of specialty care available here at UPMC Washington,” said Brook Ward, president, UPMC Washington. “Since joining UPMC, we have remained focused on building services that meet the needs of our community. Expanding access to neurosurgical expertise for our inpatients enhances care coordination, supports our care teams and allows patients to receive advanced care closer to home.” Support for tele-neurosurgery consults is provided by the UPMC Department of Neurosurgery, part of the UPMC Neurological Institute, which offers advanced and comprehensive medical and surgical care for complex brain, skull base and spine disorders. The institute brings together leading expertise, innovation and resources to expand access to specialized neurological care across the communities UPMC serves.
This addition reflects UPMC Washington’s continued investment in specialty care and its ongoing evolution as a regional destination for advanced services, delivering on the commitment to strengthen care locally following its June 2024 affiliation with UPMC.
