New technology brings highly specialized radiation treatments closer to home for Washington County patients
WASHINGTON, Pa, — On Tuesday, UPMC Hillman Cancer Center at UPMC Washington celebrated the addition of a second linear accelerator (Linac), expanding access to advanced cancer treatment and increasing capacity to meet the growing needs of patients across Washington County.
The new treatment unit enhances the center's ability to deliver stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) and stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS), highly precise forms of radiation therapy used to treat tumors throughout the body and brain. Using advanced imaging and real-time motion management, the Linac can target tumors with sub-millimeter accuracy while minimizing exposure to surrounding healthy tissue. Previously, access to some of these specialized treatments required patients to travel to Pittsburgh for care.

For patients, the impact is significant. In addition to expanding access to care, the technology offers shorter treatment courses, fewer visits and greater convenience while maintaining the highest standards of safety and precision.

The expansion is part of UPMC's ongoing investment in Washington County since UPMC Washington joined the health system two years ago. Through new technologies, expanded services and increased access to specialty care, UPMC continues to strengthen its ability to meet the health care needs of the community.
