UPMC Presbyterian Shadyside again earned a spot on the annual U.S. News & World Report Honor Roll of America’s “Best Hospitals,” ranking No. 15 in the nation and No. 1 in Pennsylvania.

UPMC Presbyterian Shadyside was one of only 21 hospitals in the nation included on the Honor Roll for achieving strong performance in multiple specialties. U.S. News analyzed more than 4,500 medical centers nationwide based on a variety of factors, including hospital volume, patient safety and outcomes, as well as responses from tens of thousands of physicians. This year marks UPMC’s 20th year for inclusion, improving its ranking in six clinical specialties compared to last year.

“National rankings are the byproduct of our dedicated health care professionals who care for their patients with clinical skill and unwavering compassion,” said Leslie C. Davis, senior vice president of UPMC and executive vice president and chief operating officer of the Health Services Division. “To be recognized as the best hospital in Pennsylvania is a testament to our employees who work tirelessly every day to ensure patients and families receive the best and safest possible care.”

Nationally, UPMC Presbyterian Shadyside is ranked for excellence in 11 specialty areas and is among the top 10 hospitals in cancer (No. 7) and gastroenterology and gastrointestinal surgery (No. 8). Other ranked specialties include: cardiology and heart surgery; diabetes and endocrinology; ear nose and throat; geriatrics; neurology and neurosurgery; orthopaedics; pulmonology; rehabilitation; and urology.

“To be ranked as one of the best hospitals in the country and the best hospital in the state is no small feat,” added Steven Shapiro, M.D., executive vice president and chief medical and scientific officer at UPMC and president of the Health Services Division. “These results reflect UPMC’s unique combination of world-renowned medical care, a top health insurance plan, and its close affiliation with one of the best medical schools in the country, the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine.”

Last month, U.S. News named its 2019 Honor Roll of America’s Best Children’s Hospitals, recognizing UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh as No. 8 in the country.
