York Memorial featureYORK, Pa. UPMC Memorial, UPMC Pinnacle’s new, 102-bed private-room hospital, opened its doors at 1701 Innovation Drive in west York on Aug. 18. UPMC Memorial treated more than 100 patients on Sunday.

“UPMC Memorial has seen exponential growth in Emergency Department visits, surgeries and births in the last 20 years. With this new hospital and future outpatient facility, UPMC Memorial is able to continue providing care that area residents need and want for generations to come,” stated Philip Guarneschelli, president and CEO, UPMC Pinnacle.

More than 650 employees will work at the new hospital, including 150 new hires.

“Multiple teams have worked tirelessly to ensure our new hospital was ready for opening day,” stated Michael Gaskins, president, UPMC Pinnacle Southern Region. “Blending the new services with the high-quality care from our talented staff, we are confident patients will have exceptional experiences at our newest hospital."

New and Expanded Services
The future hospital and neighboring outpatient center offer services not available at the former Memorial facility, including:

  • All private patient rooms
  • Expanded cardiovascular services
  • Treatment for patients in need of long-term acute care

Being about 36 percent larger than the building on South Belmont Street in York, the new hospital expands its services, including:

  • Three heart catheterization labs with suites specially designed for electrophysiology and interventional radiology procedures
  • Six leading-edge operating rooms
  • Emergency Department with 28 treatment rooms
  • Critical Care Unit with 14 beds

Its expanded surgical area will perform a wide range of traditional, robotic, and laparoscopic surgeries to treat colorectal conditions, hernias, hemorrhoids, obstetrics-gynecology issues, gynecological cancers, and more. UPMC Memorial has also earned the Chest Pain Center with Primary PCI accreditation given by the American College of Cardiology.

“New and modern facilities are important for better patient outcomes. The technology and expanded services in this new hospital will transform what our providers and clinical teams can offer patients and help us to provide an exceptional patient experience,” stated Michael Spangler, DO, vice president of medical affairs, UPMC Memorial.

Growing to Meet the Growing Needs of the York Area
In the last two decades, York County has experienced population growth of more than 16 percent – that’s 60,000 more individuals calling York County home.  With the growth of the population comes the growth of the community’s health care needs.

During the last 20 years, UPMC Memorial Hospital saw the number of visits to its Emergency Department swell from 15,000 per year to about 45,000, and births have increased from 300 per year to now 500 per year.

New UPMC Outpatient Center and Campus Promote Health and Wellness
Next to the hospital building will be the 120,000-square-foot, five-level UPMC Outpatient Center, opening Sept. 9. It will offer ambulatory surgery, outpatient imaging, a sleep lab, a cancer center, offices for specialty care providers, community meeting rooms, and more.

The efficient, environmentally friendly buildings are situated on a campus that preserves area wetlands and includes a community walking trail to promote health and wellness. And, the roof of the Outpatient Center will feature a serenity garden for patients and staff.

Community Celebration Event
UPMC Memorial will host a Community Celebration Saturday, Sept. 28 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the new campus. This family festival will include:

  • Free food
