For communities north of Pittsburgh, increasing closer-to-home access to signature, subspecialty care of UPMC Hillman Cancer Center, UPMC Magee-Womens Hospital and UPMC Heart and Vascular Institute

PITTSBURGH  UPMC Passavant employees, medical staff and community leaders attended a celebratory event today to learn how the Passavant hospitals and outpatient centers in the North Hills will advance as UPMC’s specialty care hub for Pittsburgh’s northern region.

“This week of Thanksgiving, we gather to thank you for everything you do for our patients, families and each other,” said Susan Hoolahan, president, UPMC Passavant. “And to give you a special gift of great news that your stellar performance has positioned us to elevate UPMC Passavant to the next level.”

UPMC is bolstering capabilities at UPMC Passavant – Cranberry, UPMC Passavant – McCandless, UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex and UPMC Outpatient Center in Hampton Township to expand convenient access to UPMC’s advanced subspecialized care for residents north of the City of Pittsburgh.

UPMC Hillman Cancer Center at UPMC Passavant

UPMC Hillman Cancer Center services will expand across UPMC Passavant’s hospitals. UPMC Passavant in McCandless today introduced new technology that will enable earlier and more accurate diagnosis of lung cancer.

“In January 2020, UPMC Passavant – McCandless will become the first hospital in the Pittsburgh region with robotic bronchoscopy for early lung cancer diagnosis,” said Hoolahan at the employee gathering. “This technology is going to save lives.”

The Auris Health Monarch™ Platform was set up Monday for employees to demonstrate, with remote controls reminiscent of a modern video gaming system.

UPMC Magee-Womens Hospital at UPMC Passavant

With a growing need for women’s health care, UPMC Passavant today announced it will add UPMC Magee-Womens Hospital services across its hospitals and centers — extending the reach of its world class women’s health and comprehensive medical-surgical care.

• UPMC Passavant – McCandless will add a full-service breast screening program with advanced digital mammography and related diagnostic services.

New screening mammography capabilities will come on-site at UPMC Outpatient Center in Hampton Township.
UPMC Passavant – Cranberry will remain the location where breast surgery is performed.
UPMC Magee-Womens Specialty Services will open inside UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex. In 2020, a comprehensive OB-GYN center comprised of physician offices, diagnostics and a specialized midwifery program will open. The location will also house a full-spectrum breast program including screening and diagnostic mammography, advanced diagnostics, minimally invasive stereotactic breast biopsies and reproductive endocrinology services.

UPMC Heart and Vascular Institute at UPMC Passavant

We’re in the life-saving business,” said Leslie C. Davis, senior vice president, UPMC, and executive vice president and chief operating officer, UPMC Health Services Division, at the UPMC Passavant celebration. “Our UPMC Heart and Vascular Institute services offered here at UPMC Passavant save lives every day.”

UPMC Passavant recently added WATCHMAN™, an advanced cardiac procedure that lowers the risk of stroke in patients with atrial fibrillation. In early 2020, the hospital will begin performing TAVR, transcatheter aortic valve replacement, a sophisticated alternative to open heart surgery for patients with aortic valve disease.

Davis introduced a special surprise guest, Mike Zdinak, a 40-year-old North Hills resident who nearly lost his life earlier this year after suffering a serious cardiac event. Zdinak and his family attended the Thanksgiving week gathering to thank UPMC Passavant doctors and staff for saving his life.

“Patients from northern Allegheny, Beaver, Butler and their surrounding counties choose UPMC Passavant for advanced specialty care with convenient access from the north,” said Davis, “They’re choosing Passavant because of its superior clinical care and patient experiences. We’re proud to decentralize UPMC’s world renowned specialized care across UPMC Passavant’s exceptional hospitals and facilities to best serve residents of the north.”
