WHAT: The UPMC Hillman Cancer Center’s Third Annual Pet Therapy Recognition Event will honor 29 trained therapy dogs and their owners. The Pet Therapy Program continues to grow each year in the number of dogs receiving therapy certification, as well as the number of UPMC Hillman Cancer Center facilities that offer therapy dog visits. In addition to the 29 dogs, seven UPMC Hillman Cancer Center facilities are now part of the program.

This year, four therapy dogs will receive a special “Silver Paw Award” to mark their fifth year of volunteering at UPMC Hillman Cancer Center. New this year is “Stuff the Crate” where employees will fill an animal crate with donated items to be delivered to Animal Friends in Pittsburgh. Dog cookies will be on sale with proceeds used to purchase meals for families staying at the Family House in Shadyside.

WHY: Pet therapy helps people cope with health problems, reduces stress and improves mood and energy levels while providing a sense of companionship. At UPMC Hillman Cancer Center, the pet therapy program permits certified therapy dogs to visit with patients and their families in the outpatient clinics.

WHO: Certified pet therapy dogs, owners, Hillman volunteers and patients.

WHERE: UPMC Hillman Cancer Center, Cooper Conference Room, 5115 Centre Ave., Pittsburgh, 15232.
